Ah, summertime. Rest, relaxation, and time spent outdoors with family. It can be easy to neglect our skin when we’re busy having fun. Between sun, sand, chlorine and heat, it’s essential to make sure we’re taking the necessary precautions to protect the largest organ in our body: our skin.

Prevent

UV levels can wreak havoc on unprotected skin, and contribute to wrinkles, age spots, premature aging and skin cancer. Your greatest ally in the fight against these is sunscreen, and lots of it!

There are two types of UV rays that can be damaging to the skin – UVA and UVB. UVB rays are what cause sunburn, while UVA rays penetrate more deeply, causing premature aging. Both are damaging to the skin, so it’s important to pick up a sunscreen labeled as “broad-spectrum,” which protects against both UVA and UVB.

Apply sunscreen at least 15-30 minutes before sun exposure to ensure the active ingredients have time to take effect. Be sure to re-apply every two hours, or immediately after getting wet to stay protected all day. This one from Neutrogena is great – it has a nice scent and is waterproof.

Maintain

While it’s important to prevent sun damage, it’s equally as important to take care of and maintain the skin we’re in. Consistent sweat and sunscreen use can cause congestion in the skin, so you may need to switch to a heavy-duty cleanser during the summer. Try something such as the Algae Deep Cleanse from Source Vital Apothecary to keep pores clear – bentonite clay purifies, while red algae and geranium essential oil soothe the skin.

The skin around your eyes is especially delicate; extra care should be taken in the summer to guard against premature aging. To help prevent crow’s feet, be sure to wear sunglasses outdoors and invest in a good eye cream. We love this one from Mad Hippie – light enough that it doesn’t feel greasy, but seriously hydrating. Pro tip: If you want to up your eye cream game, keep it in the refrigerator. It feels great, and the cold helps soothe any puffiness.

If you find that your skin begins to look and feel dull during the day, you could benefit from using a facial mist. Sprays like this one from Evian are great at adding moisture back to overheated skin.

Heal

Despite our best efforts, sunburns happen. When they do, we need to be prepared. Aloe Vera gel has stood the test of time, and remains one of our favorite ways to soothe and treat nasty burns. Stock up on your own, or keep an Aloe Vera plant at home. Avoid hot showers, and be sure to use gentle products on your skin while it’s healing. If you’re sunburned, it’s probably not the best time to try a new scrub or peel.

The little stresses in life – never ending traffic, Mondays (ugh), arguments with friends – can have a big effect on our outlook on life. It can be easy to stop being as optimistic and we can’t blame you! All of life’s uncertainties can be scary, but it’s important to keep a positive outlook – for your sanity and everyone else’s. No one wants to be a “Negative Nancy.”

Laugh It Out
One of the ways we here at the Wellington Group Marketing & PR like to push away negativity is through laughter. Crazy week got you down? Take the time to stop what you’re doing and find a friend to laugh with you. You’ll be amazed how much it will do to brighten your day. Oh and guess what? It’s also good for your health!

Count Your Blessings
Keep a journal and jot down what you’re thankful for. Stop everything you’re doing once a day and reflect on who or what you’re most grateful for. This is a great way to show yourself that, despite the little stresses that pile up, you’ve got a lot of good going on, too. One of our favorites is the 5-minute journal.

Have a Happy Folder
Sarah likes to keep a folder on her computer that’s a collection of quotes, memorable pictures and memes that inspire her or make her smile. This is great for work stresses. Have a million and ten things going on that needed to be done five minutes ago? Take a break, whip out the happy folder, and then get back to work. You’ll be amazed at how the negativity melts away.

Puppy Videos
If all else fails, Here’s a beagle apologizing to a baby.

The holiday season is in full swing and that means Christmas songs 24/7 until January. We’ve compiled a playlist of holiday favorites that will get you moving and burning off that extra slice of Grandma’s pie… Give it a listen on Spotify.

Working in public relations means lots of business trips to trade shows, conventions and client meetings. While we absolutely love traveling with our clients and have a lot of fun doing it, we find it can be difficult to stay healthy during these trips. In between prepping clients on their talking points and delivering media drops, how do the ladies of Wellington Group Marketing & PR maintain a healthy lifestyle on the road? Read on to find out!

–       Extra Sleep Before – Make sure you get plenty of sleep the night before you leave. Riding in a plane for hours can drain your body of energy leaving you too tired to get work done. Trust us, you’ll be happy you got some extra hours of shut-eye.

–       Morning Workouts – Wake up early to take a jog around the hotel, swim laps in the pool or experiment with the gym equipment. Whatever you do, don’t neglect your workout! We love jogging (in a safe area) because it helps us become familiar with the neighborhood we are staying in.

–       Pack Healthy Snacks – When traveling, we are surrounded by junk food. Packing a few of your favorite healthy snacks can be a lifesaver! Take a batch of your favorite granola or pick up some fruit at a market near your hotel.

–       Research Before – Before you leave, take a few minutes to find out where some healthy restaurants are in the area you’ll be staying in. Once you arrive to your destination and have to start working, you’ll be glad you already know where to grab a good salad.

–       Water Water Water! – This tip is super important! Pack a water bottle in your suitcase and take it with you everywhere. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water each day. You won’t regret!

We’ll admit it — we’re up for anything that’s aligned with living a healthy lifestyle.  From cold-pressed juices or the latest and greatest workout to a new running shoe – we’ll try most anything. But even we’ll confess, we were a bit skeptical about taking a new vitamin supplement. Hum Nutrition, however, got us humming a new tune.

Vitamins have always been a little ho hum if you ask us and, sure…we’ll say it — cookie cutter. There’s no personalization until now. What we liked about Hum Nutrition right out of the gate was the simple test you take that focuses on your lifestyle habits – what and how much you eat and drink, your level of activity, age, and even down to the amount of sunshine you soak in. Your test results are sent to a nutritionist who analyzes them and makes personalized recommendations from their stellar lineup of vitamins. Emily, our PR & Marketing Ninja, and her husband decided to give Hum Nutrition a try, and they have really been impressed with their products.

The nutritionists at Hum recommended OMG! Omega the Great; Here Comes the Sun (yes, we need more vitamin D, even here in Texas) and Arctic Repair for the couple. But it’s not just about the vitamins that are recommended for you, it’s their other offerings that are enticing too. For instance, you don’t have to have their über famous Red Carpet vitamin pack that gives you glowy skin and shiny hair. But hey, who doesn’t want that? Or, you can try their Skinny Bird that includes 7-Keto to increase fat burn and green tea to boost metabolism. We just finished the holidays and might have had an extra slice of cheesecake!

What we love about Hum Nutrition is their dedication to the cause. As you know, we here at Wellington Group Marketing & PR love supporting entrepreneurs. The two Hum founders uprooted their families from London and moved to the U.S. to pursue this supplement dream of theirs — and achieve it they have! Plus, their products are gluten free, non-GMO and are sustainably sourced to boot.  And did we mention their fabulous line-up of nutritionists? What’s not to love?!

You might be thinking, “Yeah, but where’s the proof?” Emily passed on the Detox Cleanse to her sister who was feeling a bit sluggish after the holidays and a week later received this text: “I just wanted to tell you thank you for all of the vitamin stuff you gave me. My skin has cleared up, and I just feel a whole lot better!”

We look forward to seeing Hum Nutrition hum along for years to come!

Happy 2015, y’all! Here at Wellington Group Marketing & PR, the saying, “New Year, New You” is popular because it reminds us that with the new year, comes the opportunity to make necessary changes. For each member of our team, leading a healthy lifestyle is a priority, which is why many of our New Year’s resolutions revolve around being more mindful of how we treat our bodies. Below are some of our favorite healthy New Year’s resolutions. Feel free to make them yours!

Eating Clean – Eating healthier doesn’t have to be complicated! Many times, it’s as simple as grabbing an apple rather than heading to the office vending machine. Eating clean will leave you feeling more energized and ready to tackle your work.

Work Out – Working out for fifteen minutes is better than not being active at all. When you get home from work, resist the urge to be a couch potato (we know, it’s hard) and take at least 15-30 minutes to get your body moving!

Floss Your Teeth – Don’t you just hate when your dentist asks you if you’ve been flossing?  This year, surprise them by making a resolution to incorporate flossing as part of your nightly routine.  It may seem silly, but neglecting your oral health is serious stuff! Flossing takes less than one minute, so we all have absolutely no excuse.

Get More Sleep – Set a routine and stick to it. If you get tired around 10 p.m., then hit the hay! We promise we won’t call you a granny. Getting adequate shut-eye will leave you more energized during the day and improve your mood. Who wouldn’t want that?!

Wear Sunscreen – According to National Cancer Institute, sun damage starts at an early age. This means we should be wearing sunscreen everyday, and no, not only when we are lounging by the pool. If you aren’t using a facial moisturizer with SPF, make the switch today!

What are your resolutions this year?

It’s no surprise that trying different healthy products is one of our favorite things to do here at Wellington Group Marketing & PR. Last week, we hit up Snap Kitchen to grab a quick lunch and found ourselves completely distracted by all the delicious cold-pressed juices staring back at us. We had no idea which one to buy because they all sounded so great!

After mulling over our choices, we decided on the Energy Boost, a juicy combination of lime, papaya, watermelon, mint and coconut water. As if we weren’t excited enough to taste this refreshing drink, one of Snap Kitchen’s awesome employees offered us a complimentary Easy Greens juice made of apple, spinach, cucumber, kale, lemon, and lemongrass. They were absolutely delicious!

The Energy Boost had us reminiscing of summertime and the Easy Greens filled us with nutritious veggies while still tasting great. We loved them so much, in fact, the team has made a very important decision to try Snap Kitchen’s Spicy Basil Lemonade and Chai Cashew “Milkshake” very soon. So, next time you need a little afternoon pick-me-up, head to one of Snap Kitchen’s seven locations in Austin – you’ll be in juice heaven!

A few weeks ago, we attended the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ 2014 Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE) in Atlanta, also known as the largest meeting of food and nutrition experts in the world. With more than 350 exhibitors, the conference is a health and lifestyle expert’s dream. Since many of our clients have either exhibited at FNCE in the past or plan to in the future, we think it’s important to attend and walk the floor to learn about the latest and greatest in food and nutrition trends. We also like to see what works and what doesn’t when it comes to raising brand awareness through exhibiting. Exhibiting is an investment and we want to make sure our clients get the most out of it.

From elaborate exhibits like a Kellogg’s food trailer dedicated to cereals – with your choice of fruit and milk – to a smoothie and Avocado bar by the Haas Avocado Board, to smaller exhibits that still made quite an impression with the tasty food and drink samples, exhibitors really did a stellar job of promoting their product and/or service. We talked to dairy and pig farmers, pharmacists, company owners and of course, loads of nutritionists – who all were incredibly knowledgeable about the brand they represented. The booths with samples had the most people stopping by (it’s a food and nutrition conference, so of course there was a lot to sample!). And boy, were there some really creative ways to get samples into mouths. One that stood out in particular was Ensure – they put their drink in an ice cream machine as a new and different way for patrons to sample the product. Super smart and super yummy!

Many exhibitors had an interactive aspect to their booth. We got to write down what was on our Pork Bucket List and take our photo with avocados while showing off our favorite food avocado combo. We even had our picture taken with a 7-foot peach and a life-sized cow. And, after learning about each product, we answered multiple-choice questions at all four corners of the Campbell’s booth to get a complimentary apron (that has measurements, conversions, and other tips that are helpful while cooking – every foodie’s dream!). These may seem like silly ways to get people to interact with your brand, but it left a memorable and positive impression.

After six plus hours of walking the floor, we made it to all 350 exhibitors. We left with loads of SWAG, food samples, marketing collateral and a lot to think about and do – follow-up after the show (for us and for exhibitors) is crucial to ensure it was time and money well spent and it’s time to start strategizing for how our clients should be involved in FNCE 2015.

Bearded Brothers

Nothing excites the Wellington Group team more than discovering new local products. Our latest find? Bearded Brothers Energy Bars. Their packaging – complete with the silhouettes of two very bearded brothers – immediately caught our eye while waiting in the checkout line at Juiceland. A quick scan of the label revealed that the bars are 100% natural and made in our very own Austin, Texas, so really, how could we resist?

Not only are the bars gluten-free, organic and vegan, they are also delicious, coming in five different flavors including Blueberry Vanilla, Coconut Mango, Maca Chocolate, Ginger Peach and Raspberry Lemon. In addition to their yummy-ness, the bars are energizing, providing the perfect afternoon pick-me-up to power us through the rest of the workday.

We’re definitely going to keep our snack bar stocked with Bearded Brothers Energy Bars from now on, and you should too! The next time you’re in the mood for a snack, grab one from your local grocery store or at one of their 300 selected vendors nationwide – you won’t be disappointed.
